We are happy to announce that after a 20 year break from our production roster at Smethwick, the Conquest is back on!
When we first made it in 1988, this slimline, sporty, sprung saddle was designed to bridge the gap between our lighter racing pieces and those equipped with suspension coils.
A machine riveted version, the Conqueror followed, as did a ladies’ version of both, the Brooks Countess and Conqueror-S. As well as a traditional black undercarriage, all four could also be had with the bracket, coils and bridge enamelled in purple, yellow or red. The red ones can nowadays still be seen doing the rounds, while yellows or purples in good nick tend to go for relatively big money on auction sites.
Through the late ’80s and early ’90s the Conquest was well regarded among mountain bikers. If you’re a recent convert to competitive Fatbike riding, this would be a fine saddle to bolt to your seatpost.
But let’s not put all our eggs in one basket, the Conquest has plenty to offer any riders who tend to sit up straight, regardless of whether they’re ploughing through icy forests or simply getting around town.
The relatively narrow bridge and backplate allow its spring coils sit much closer together than any of our other sprung saddles. It’s a feature which contributes to its suitability for high performance off-road cycling, but also one which, when taken together with the unridged tapering leather top and hand hammered copper rivets, gives it a distinguished attractive look.
There are no bag loops, and no immediate plans to release the Conquest with an undercarriage painted in any colour other than black. But we are really pleased to welcome the Conquest back to the Brooks stable.
